Balboa is a direct descendant of Charleston, characterized by what can be a very rapid basic foot pattern but with the upper bodies very close together and moving very little. As Swing became more popular in the 30s and 40s, dancers began to add underarm turns and other patterns into the classic Balboa where the couples would never separate and remained in a "closed" dance position (Hence Bal/Swing). Lindy dancers are now discovering the joys of Balboa since the dance can be done rapidly, but without the constant moving through space. Balboa gives dancers a chance to suck air and then go back to the energetic Lindy.
